RAILWAY BRIDGE IN BRANIK

Reinforced-concrete railway bridge in Braník is a part of southern junction line of Prague railway ring with main target to divert the freight traffic outside the city centre, especially out of shunting station in Vršovice through Záběhlice, Krč and Braník to Malá Chuchle and Radotín. This junction is connected to line Prague – Plzeň there.

Design of the bridge was processed in three versions by ing. dr. Jiří Klimeš (1910-1981). Finally a version with fifteen segment bays with dimension of fifty-three and half a meter was accepted. Designing work was realized by ing. arch. Zbyněk Krušina and ing. arch. Vladislav Valoušek. The bridge was made as a reinforced concrete, double-line bridge with footbridge for the pedestrian or cyclists. However, they must go upstairs to the bridge deck on both sides.

The bridge is 910 m long and 14 m wide. In contrast to the previous presumptions, there is only one line on the bridge, leading on the north side. Its height is 19 m above the normal status of water level of Vltava and on the left shore it also arches a four-lane highway and double-line railway line Prague – Plzeň. Towards station in Chuchle the line of bridge route leads through arch-routed tunnel, drifted in a rock wall above the line of previous Czech western line. On the right shore, the bridge spans over the road, tram line to Modřany and railway line Prague–Čerčany. Successful load tests were carried out on 1955. Arrival of railway engines, which had proved the bridge in the static aspect, was then possible only from the side of Chuchle, as linking of the line had not been completed on the other side.

This bridge over Vltava does not have any official name, it is rather known as a railway bridge in Braníku. And Old-Prague citizens call it Bridge of Intelligence. That means that a lot of people with academic decrees worked on the construction. They, like thousands of other educated people became victims of cleaning of the previous regime in the beginning of the fifties and they were shifted to blue-collar jobs or to common jobs.
